Field of study: Theory, history and critique of culture
Theory, history and critique of culture focuses on the reflection, registering and interpretation of the most varied forms of cultural manifestations or those which speak for themselves. This is the case with the study of literary texts, with relevant works by Amazonian authors, or by writers, that from far away, cast their eyes on the Amazon and helped to construct an imaginary culture of a region that dates back to the tales of the 16th century travelers. The empirically observable Amazon reality has consisted of an object of desire and seduction for a very long time, and the imagination created by it over the last few centuries is very meaningful. Evidently, that is the question which isn´t limited to literature, when we remember that culture, in its most diverse forms, isn´t restricted to the written text or even to western practices. The mythical narratives of the Amazon have been transmitted from generation to generation by the local populations and have helped to construct an image or self-portrait of the Amazonian societies, in their ethnic, linguistic and cultural plurality projected to the world. From written text to oral story, from the fireside meeting to songs intoned on social networks, the multiple forms and practices of producing and transmitting knowledge and experiences, the Amazon is the birthplace and stage for a wide range of cultural manifestations, products of complex societies that are almost always still to be studied. This is the pivotal object of the investigation of the Master¿s course in Humanities: the culture in its multiple and complex possibilities of production, transmission and documentation, to which the untrained eye is sometimes unable to appreciate. |
